Four years after the first version of this composition, Maltsev returned to the same image. The figures remain - mother, child, man with horse - but the emotional register has shifted. Where the earlier work felt enclosed and intimate, this painting opens outward. The steppe breathes. Light reaches the horizon.
Most significantly, the woman now looks directly at the viewer. Her gaze is steady, unhurried, carrying neither plea nor resignation. It is the look of someone who has already decided to endure.
