The artist returned to this painting over several years, gradually shaping its emotional and symbolic meaning. The image was inspired by Mikhail Sholokhov's novel "And Quiet Flows the Don", particularly the scene of the ancient oak beneath which the protagonist Grigory buries Aksinya. In Maltsev's interpretation, the oak becomes more than a literary reference. It stands as a symbol of endurance - a witness to loss, memory, and the continuous struggle for life.
